The Uses of Scripture
Discussion Questions
Why do we read the Bible (Scripture)?
“But you, remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it, and that from infancy you have known [the] sacred scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:14-17
This passage comes from St. Paul’s second letter to Timothy, who was a trusted companion of St. Paul on his second and third missionary journeys. St. Paul was writing near the end of his ministry and his life to Timothy to encourage him to remain steadfast in his faith. In doing so, St. Paul was reminding Timothy of the purposes and power of Sacred Scripture.
Activity 1: Uses of Scripture
Analyze 2 Timothy 3:14-17 and list all the uses for Scripture that St. Paul mentions to Timothy. You may look up and define any words they do not understand, such as refutation, righteousness, and competent. After analyzing the passage, write a sentence in your own words that summarizes St. Paul’s message to Timothy about the uses of Scripture.
Then choose one of the uses of Scripture St. Paul mentions to Timothy and write on Handout A two ways you can put Scripture to that use in your own lives.
For example, if you choose “teaching” and you could list that you would use Scripture to teach a younger sibling how to treat others with respect or that you could volunteer for a to help teach younger children about Jesus (YOU MAY NOT COPY THIS EXAMPLE).
